Decorating for Fall: My Favorite Techniques
Everyone enjoys decorating for fall in their own way. Personally, I love to not overdo it and keep it overall chic and minimal. For example, I love to pop in small pumpkins, Halloween decor, and classic fall colors throughout my home! Here are the steps I typically follow to transition to fall decorating in my home:
-
I change out my faux florals when I feel that first little chill in the air. I’ll swap a bright, summer-colored floral for something maroon, purple, brown, or dark green (like these burgundy dried peonies).
-
Next, I make the throw pillows in my home fit more of a fall color palette. Some of my favorite ones to use when decorating for fall in a living room or bedroom are the Noelle Pillow and the Lydia Pillow.
-
When it really starts to get chilly is when I start to incorporate pumpkins and more classic, spooky Halloween decorations. A few absolute favorite pieces that I use year after year are these Toile Pumpkins and these Pottery Barn Ghost Taper Candles.

Fall Faux Florals
Faux florals are a great addition to your home any time of the year, adding a touch of luxury and elegance. And coordinating the colors with the season? Such a tasteful way to shift the overall vibe of your home for the time of year. Here are some of my favorites for fall:

More Fall Decorating Tips
-
Be sure to complement the color palette and interior design style in your home. While decorating for fall is a festive time to throw in some different decor than usual, you want to make sure it doesn’t feel out of place. Think about the existing style of your home and find decorations that fit the same feel. For example, if you have a bold and colorful home, find some bold Halloween pieces! If you have a more vintage, country home, find some vintage fall decorations that will fit right in.
-
Decorate when it feels right to you. Some people want to start right on September 1st, and some people want to wait until the last possible minute. Again, my favorite is a slow transition, but if you just can’t wait any longer, you go for it!
-
Think about how you use your home to determine the ultimate vibe of your fall decorating. Is your home more of a cozy, safe space or a place for hosting fun celebrations? Utilize lighting, colors, and decoration style based on your main use of your space.
-
Don’t forget about the outside! Your outdoor setup is the first look at your home, so make sure you bring what’s on the inside to the outside as well. If you have a front porch, consider adding some stylish autumn decorations to that space, too.
