Color Drenching 101: The Interior Design Trend You Need to See

Color drenching is having a moment in interior design, and for good reason. It’s a great way to make your home bold and elevated, creating an immersive experience for you and your guests. As an East Texas interior designer, I’m loving the trend and am here to tell you everything you need to know about how to achieve the look!

What is Color Drenching, and Why Should I Do It?

Color drenching is just that: drenching a room in a color. It’s a monochromatic moment where you use one single color throughout the whole room. I’m talking: the wall color, the ceiling color, and even the furniture and decorations! It’s a timeless look that really does elevate your home, and the best part? You can do it in any room in your interior design.

I highly recommend doing this, as an East Texas interior designer. One, because it creates a stunning look, and two, because it’s easy to make yours. No matter your style, color drenching can add character and playfulness to your space. There are so many ways to do color drenching, and when it’s done correctly, it’s absolutely beautiful.

How to Color Drench a Room

Now that you’re on board with color drenching, how do you do it? I have the whole interior design guide to do it, and do it well.

  1. Go All in With Color

Color drenching requires you to commit to the color fully. Walls, ceilings, trim, cabinetry, doors… All in the same shade! That’s the only way to achieve that seamless and cohesive color drenched room look, and let the room fully envelope you. Any accents not in that color should have similar hues and shades, at the very least.

  1. Incorporate Your Decor

You have to think about how your decor will play a part in your space. You can even base your color on your decor! For example, if there’s a green couch that you’ve been eyeing, go all in and find a shade of green that matches to color drench your living room! Find small pieces of decor, artwork, light fixtures, and furniture that work to tie everything together smoothly.

  1. Add Depth With Textures and Patterns

Don’t be afraid to mix textures and patterns in your color drenching. This can add more depth to your room AND give you the opportunity to make it feel more like you. For example, I’ve used a wallpaper with similar hues for the ceiling in a blue color drenched room, and I love the way it elevated the space. Some of my other favorite ways to do this are with throw pillows, artwork, and metals.

More Tips for Color Drenching

  • Mix paint finishes

Incorporating different finishes in your paint can add more texture to your room. Think some glossy paint elements and some matte paint elements. This makes a cohesive, seamless space, plus adds a bit of visual interest.

  • Think about your door casings

This is one of the most overlooked things when color drenching a room! The whole point of color drenching is to avoid harsh lines and abruptness between two different colors, so go all in, and don’t forget your door casings. The key is to paint the entire depth of the casing the color of the room when facing it.

  • Don’t forget about light switches and outlet covers

Another common mistake I see in color drenching is having all the paint and decor done properly, then leaving a standard white light switch or outlet cover on the wall. My recommendation is to either paint these covers to match or invest in custom ones that match the space. You can find some stunning light switch covers at Resident Supply or Buster and Punch.

Common Questions About Color Drenching

Still have questions before you go all in on color drenching? Here are some frequently asked questions I get all the time as an East Texas interior designer:

Why Should I Color Drench?

Color drenching can make your room feel seamless and harmonious, plus it can make it feel bigger and tidier. I love seeing a room get color drenched while working on an interior design project, and as a result, seeing a more expansive space than it seemed before.

Should I Color Drench With a Dark Paint or Light Paint?

Using dark paint or light paint to color drench fully depends on what you’re going for in your look. If you want a room to appear larger, a lighter or neutral paint color may be the way to go. Some of my favorites are Taupe of the Morning and Egret White by Sherwin Williams. If you want a space to look more elegant and luxurious, I would recommend a darker color. Two of my favorites are Tempe Star and Marooned by Sherwin Williams! You can see Tempe Star in action here:

Where Can I Color Drench?

This is the best part, you can color drench anywhere. I personally love color drenching in smaller spaces like bedrooms, offices and libraries but the opportunities are endless!
