The Comprehensive Guide to Different Types of Cabinet Styles From an East Texas Interior Designer

Whether you’re working on a kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room design, you’ll be faced with the decision to pick out cabinet styles. Knowing the different types will help you be more prepared to make that decision. See the guide from a Texas interior designer for the different cabinet styles, partial overlay, full overlay, and inset, broken down by budget and style.

Partial overlay cabinets, full overlay cabinets, and inset cabinets

Partial Overlay Cabinet Styles:

Partial overlay is the most common and most affordable option for your cabinet styles. You see these in traditional style homes often! Partial overlay cabinets cover part of the frame, but leave around half an inch to an inch of the frame visible around each door and drawer.

A great way to spice these up a little bit if you do choose a partial overlay cabinet style is to add a fun pop of color or some custom hardware. See how doing this made a common home cabinet style appear more modern and luxurious in this design.

Full Overlay Cabinet Styles:

As opposed to a partial overlay cabinet, a full overlay cabinet does not leave any of the frame to be seen. These are a middle point price range between partial overlay and custom inset, and are usually seen in more modern homes.

Personally, I love the look of a full overlay and think it gives you that modern luxury feel without the price tag of fully inset cabinets. This bathroom design used a full overlay for its cabinet styles, and I don’t think it could have turned out better.

Inset Cabinet Styles:

Inset cabinets are the priciest of the three cabinet styles, but your most custom option as well. This takes a bit more work because each cabinet has to fit perfectly into the section that is cut out for it. These cabinets are by far my favorite and definitely give a more modern and sleek look to a home, but definitely can be pricey due to the labor and customization options!

Selecting Your Cabinet Door Molding:

Once you select your cabinet style, you have to think about cabinet door molding as well. The most popular choice for this is shaker style. It’s a timeless rectangle finish that lets the cabinet doors look sleek and modern. The other two most popular molding styles are recessed panel and raised panel, which look similar but give a slightly more raised look than the shaker does.

There are many more options for this, but here is an overview of the basic and most popular styles. Your choice for this is fully based on personal preference and how you want your cabinet style to match the rest of the room!
