Picture this: you’re out shopping and find the perfect piece of artwork your home has been missing. Of course, you buy it immediately and bring it home to hang on your wall right away. Then you realize you have no clue how high you’re supposed to hang it. How far should it be from your furniture? At what point is it eye-level? Should you be looking up at it or straight at it?
Whether you’re in this exact situation or you’re planning your new interior design, this guide will help you find the perfect height to hang wall art that makes sense in your space.
The Correct Height to Hang a Picture:
Hanging artwork at the wrong height is a very common interior design mistake I see. As a rule of thumb, you always want your wall art to be eye-level. Your eyes should naturally meet the midline of the art piece when you walk by, as opposed to you having to look up at it. This ensures that your beautiful art can actually be seen without anyone having to crane their neck to admire it.
The correct height to hang a picture is around 55-60 inches from the ground to the middle of the art piece. This is a perfect average height for the eyes to meet the middle point of that artwork so that itcan be admired. Take my word for it when I say that this will never be an awkward height for a photo to hang on your wall!
The Correct Height to Hang a Picture Above a Piece of Furniture:
If you’re hanging a piece of artwork above a piece of furniture, the rules change slightly, just because it can depend on the height of your furniture or the type of furniture underneath your art. You don’t want your artwork to be too close or too far away from furniture, like a sideboard, couch, or console table. How High to Hang a Gallery Wall:
For gallery walls, the same rules apply! Treat a gallery wall like it’s one piece of art so that the same rule applies – the midline of the art should be 55-60 inches off the ground. Once you create the center of your gallery wall with that rule in mind, the rest will flow naturally around it! Make sure not to make it too unbalanced on the top or bottom as not to lose that center point.
